St Cuthbert’s Way Day 5 – Yetholm to Wooler

St Cuthbert’s Way Day 5 – Yetholm to Wooler

St Cuthbert’s Way Walk Day 5 would see us walking from Yetholm to Wooler – a distance of about 16 miles.

Having stayed at The Plough Hotel overnight, we walked back to the point where we had left the St Cuthbert’s Way route the previous day.

Start of Day 5

Initially we walked from Yetholm to Kirk Yethom.

Kirk Yetholm is also the end (or start if you prefer) of the Pennine Way. The next section of the route was also the same as the Pennine Way.

We reached a point as we turned off the road, where the route of St Cuthbert’s Way and The Pennine Way Low route went in different directions. The Pennine Way High route continued in the same direction as we were going for a while longer.

We then started climbing.

Having skirted around Green Humbleton and departed off the Pennine Way High route, we reached the border between Scotland and England.

Having crossed back into England, we continued onward towards Wooler.

An ‘interesting’ stile

Another ‘interesting’ stile

We then started dropping down towards Elsdonburn.

Having reached Elsdonburn, we then followed a farm road for a while.

Trail Mix Pit Stop

As we reached Hethpool, we detoured off the route to meet Nicholl for lunch. It was really windy!

After lunch, we rejoined the route.

We briefly missed a turning and ended up going the wrong way for a little while. However when we realised our mistake, we were able to retrace our steps and pick up the route again.

There were plenty of amazing views along the way.

Grouse lookout

As we got nearer to Wooler, we dropped down through a wooded area.

The wooded area took us down to the Wooler Common car park where we were suprised to meet the two Andy’s (who were cycling their St Cuthbert’s Way Coast-to-Coast) as well as Nicholl.

After a brief break, the Andy’s cycled off to Wooler and Nicholl joined us for the last section of the walk from Wooler Common to Wooler.

The outskirts of Wooler

We reached the Tankerville Arms Hotel on the far side of Wooler, where we were staying.

The two Andy’s were already enjoying their ‘perfect pint’ in the beer garden. Nicholl joined them. However Neil and I left our backpacks and then had to run back up to Wooler Common to collect the car – it was a hard uphill run after a long days walk! We did enjoy a well earnt ‘perfect pint’ when we returned. That evening we had a celebration meal for Nicholl’s 50th birthday.

We had walked almost 16 miles which included 2470 feet of climbing and then ran 1.6 miles (climbing an extra 343 feet). You can view our walking route from Yetholm to Wooler and the route of our run from Wooler to Wooler Common below:
