Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 5 – Corbridge to Newcastle

Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 5 – Corbridge to Newcastle

Well today was Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 5 and our last day of cycling Hadrian’s Cycleway. We left Corbridge and headed out down the country lanes.

Along the way we passed a small cottage (owned by the National Trust) which is where George Stephenson was born (and lived until he was 8). There was a lovely little cafe behind it where we stopped for a cuppa.

Feeling refreshed, we set off again. Today was basically following the River Tyne.

Once we arrived at Newcastle Quayside, we stopped and ate our lunch.

A short ride further along, we stopped again. This time for a drink and ice cream at the Cycle Hub Cafe. We also got to watch a little of the Tour de France whilst we were there. Tempting as it was to stay and watch more,  it was time to move on!

We now were following the same route as we had a few weeks earlier when we did the Coast and Castles South ride.

When we arrived at Tynemouth Priory and Castle, it was closed for the weekend due to a series of concerts, so we were not able to look around.

However one of the official ends of the route is near Tynemouth Priory and Castle, although this is not where we were finishing.

From here we headed to the ferry port to catch the ferry across the River Tyne.

Having arrived at South Shields we set off for the Arbeia Roman Fort.

The finish point of our route was the Arbeia Roman Fort.

Although we had now completed the official ride section of Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 5, we still had to cycle towards Newcastle to the Travelodge at Whitemare Pool which is where we were staying for the night.

Having settled in, we went to the Lakeside Inn for a celebratory meal, which was excellent.

It had been a very enjoyable ride with fantastic weather!  Looking forward to our next tour already!
