Return to Halton Castle

The Stockport Community Cycling Club return to Halton Castle took place on a fine summer Sunday. Indeed, the sun also brought a healthy number of club members.

We met at Gatley Rail station.

We then began by heading out through the urban lanes of  Wythenshawe.

And then Hale.

Before eventually reaching the more rural roads of Dunham Massey.

We crossed the bridge at Park View near to the ‘Swan With Two Nicks’.

From here we weaved our way around the edges of Lymm and through High Legh.

And towards Antrobus.

We then made our way through the lanes of Whitley.

And into Halton.

After crossing over Chester Road we then climbed up Red Brow Lane.

The ride continued to climb up Norton Lane and towards Halton village.

Eventually we reached the top and Halton Castle.

From the top there were some great views out over Runcorn and Widnes.

We then cycled back down the hill making our way through Phoenix Park.

And Manor Park.

Lunch was at Evenwood Farm. This is the place of the big cakes fame (though we didn’t succumb to the temptation this year!). Last year Sarah struggled to find anything to eat, but this year the pub chain provided a helpful list of gluten-free options.

After lunch we started our way back home by cycling through Moore.

And then followed the Bridgewater Canal through Higher Walton.

And from there across the cobbles at Grappenhall.

Eventually we picked up the Trans Pennine Trail path at Thelwall.

We followed the trail all the way to Broadheath. From here we weaved our way through Altrincham.

Finally we arrived back at the start having cycled 50 miles. This had been another great trip out to Halton Castle.
