E2E Day 22 – Helmsdale to John o’Groats

E2E Day 22 – Helmsdale to John o’Groats

E2E Day 22. Leaving Helmsdale Youth Hostel took us straight up a big long hill!

Along the A9 and then onto the A99. After a while we turned off the main road and set off down some minor roads towards Watten where we had planned to have lunch.

The scenery was a lot more bleak now. The was a section where there were sheep & lambs roaming around, so we had to be careful that they didn’t run across in front of us!

When we got to Watten, the pub was shut and there was not much else around! We went to the local shop but choice was very limited. I ended up with a bag of crisps, 2 crunchies and a cup of tea – not very nutritious but better than nothing!
The roads from there were mainly long, straight and very boring! The undulated but seemed to go on for ever!

Finally we got to see the sea at the top of the country.

Finally we arrived at John o’Groats.

A couple of hours later the others arrived and we got a group photo.

Well done to everyone!

Some of us then cycled on to Wick  (another 17 miles) but some got a taxi  for them and their bikes. For those of us that cycled, it meant we had cycled 70 miles. The hotel (The Nethercliffe) was a very welcome sight!

As a celebration we went to a French restaurant (Au Bord de L’eau) and had a fantastic meal!
