Cycle it to Wincanton From Yeovil

It is twelve months since Sarah and I last visited Yeovil. That time, as this, we took the opportunity to combine Sarah’s work trip with a chance to visit my brother Chris. And I took the opportunity to get some cycling in. Last time I cycled from Bournemouth to Yeovil , and then Yeovil to Bournemouth. This time I decided upon a circular route to Wincanton.

We were staying at the Pen Mill Hotel, a cracking little place. So, having seen Sarah set off for work, I got my bike out of the back of the car.

And set off into another county.

After a brief journey along the main road, the route picked up NCN Route 26 by turning off on to Underdown Hollow.

Soon I was entering the outskirts of Sherborne.

Before turning off into the little valley of Clatcombe Lane and climbing past Sherborne golf club.

Following the national byway route at one point took me up a rather steep and hazardous track.

I walked this bit!

From the top I picked up a lane that ran alongside the local railway line.

And towards the village of Milborne Wick.

Next, the route climbed towards Stowell.

Before heading towards South Sheriton.

And on to Wincanton.

Perhaps because I wasn’t familiar with the town, finding a place to sit down for a sandwich and a cup of tea proved more difficult than I thought. There’s a Morrison’s, but its cafe only seemed to serve meals, and the sandwiches were to take away. Eventually, The Wagtail, the local Marstons pub came to the rescue.

After lunch it was straight out on to the A371 and up Lawrence Hill. Thankfully, this was short and I was soon turning off on to a quieter road (and another hill) towards Holton.

This road ran parallel with the A303 for a while.

This took me through the villages of Compton Pauncefoot and South Cadbury, in the parish of Camelot. Cadbury Castle hill fort is near here.

Continuing on, I headed towards Corton Denham.

I cycled through Sandford Orcas. From here I could see Yeovil in the distance.

And then Trent.

Finally, I returned to Somerset, and Yeovil.

I really enjoyed this ride. I had cycled nearly 35 miles and climbed 2600 feet.
